✂Why the ISO is smaller

Comparing the v1.47 image file by file showed it carried build leftovers that no running system uses. They are now left out; everything you run is unchanged.

Removed from the ISOSize before compressionWhy it isn't needed
GCC 16 debug info~1.4 GBThe compiler programs (cc1, cc1plus, lto1, lto-dump) shipped with full debug info, about 400 MB each; now about 52 MB each. Compiling is identical; the debug info only helps someone debugging GCC itself. The full compiler toolchain stays, so building from source still works.
Old GCC 14 compilers~1 GBThe temporary compiler from the original Linux From Scratch bootstrap, plus a leftover Debian gcc-14. Nothing used them; gcc is GCC 16.
Chromium build tools~900 MBPrograms used only while building the browser (V8 snapshot generators, torque, protoc, gn, ...) and Google's test lists. The browser never runs them, and a source build makes its own.
Duplicate Rust363 MBAn older copy, Rust 1.99.0. The current Rust 1.99.1 stays, for building from source.
Old Mesa libraries~125 MBFive earlier versions of the graphics library left by past updates. Only Mesa 26.2.5 is used.
Build-computer files~110 MBNVIDIA driver and firmware files from the build computer, which v1.46 and v1.47 included by mistake. LinuxDoors uses the open nouveau driver, as before. Also left out now: browser profiles, a desktop keyring and a remote-desktop password file from test sessions on the build computer's user account (no saved passwords were in the browser profiles). Every account gets fresh ones on first login. The build now stops by itself if any of these ever turn up again. A stray 12 MB build list at the root of the ISO is gone too.

✓How it was tested

The v1.49 ISO was booted in a virtual machine in both BIOS and UEFI mode, and the updated and new AppImages were run on its desktop.

  • PassedThe ISO boots to the desktop in BIOS and UEFI mode with 0 failed services, kernel 7.2.11.
  • PassedEvery updated package reports its new version; nothing in /usr/bin is missing a library because of this release.
  • PassedGCC 16 without its debug info compiles and runs C and C++ programs, including with link-time optimization.
  • PassedChromium loads a page with its build tools removed.
  • PassedNo browser profiles, keyrings, NVIDIA files or old compilers are in the image.
  • PassedWarp Engine Visualizer runs in CPU and GPU mode; GIF Maker turns an MP4 into a GIF using its own ffmpeg and gifsicle.
  • PassedPdfCraft 0.9.0 opens and shows a PDF; PhotoCraft 0.10.0 opens an image (CPU rendering in a virtual machine, as expected).
  • NoteKdenlive 26.08.2 and Kate build 12730 run on other Linux systems. On LinuxDoors they needed libglvnd, which LinuxDoors didn't ship yet -- fixed in 1.50.
