♫What you can do with it

CommandWhat it does
alsamixerA full-screen volume mixer in the terminal. Arrow keys pick a control and change it; M mutes or unmutes.
speaker-test -c 2 -t wavSays "front left", "front right" through each speaker in turn, to check the wiring. Ctrl+C stops it.
aplay -lLists the sound cards LinuxDoors found.
aplay file.wavPlays a WAV file.
arecord -d 5 test.wavRecords five seconds from the microphone.
amixerShows or changes volumes from a script, e.g. amixer set Master 80%.

These play through PulseAudio when it's running, like every other program, so they don't take the sound card away from your music or browser.

PackageVersionWhat changed
alsa-utilsNew1.2.16Built as the BLFS book describes. Includes alsactl and its startup service, which saves your volume levels at shutdown and puts them back at boot.

✓How it was tested

The v1.52 ISO was booted in a virtual machine with a sound card, in BIOS and UEFI mode.

  • PassedBoth boots reach the desktop with no failed services; pkg update finds nothing to update.
  • Passedaplay -l lists the sound card; amixer shows its Master and Capture controls.
  • Passedaplay played audio to the card, speaker-test ran through both channels, and arecord recorded, all without errors.
  • Passedalsactl store saved the mixer state, and the restore service ran at boot.
  • PassedEvery sound tool finds all of its libraries; the full missing-library check is identical to v1.51.
